Evolution of Programming

Tutoring classAs student needs and best practices changed, the programs, classes, volunteers, and instructors progressed too. For many years, trained and supported volunteer tutors worked individually with adult students, both native English speakers and English language learners, to provide literacy education. The way of teaching grew from one-on-one tutoring by volunteers to include paid staff who taught and supervised volunteers. The combination of volunteer tutors and paid staff became a more efficient and effective way of instruction. The use of tutoring pairs has remained an important and impactful way of instruction to this day.

With the increase in student needs and numbers, group classes were offered in Literacy Network classrooms, at community sites, and at workplaces. Throughout the expansion of services over the years, programming retained its flexibility to best meet the needs of students. This has provided students a way to learn while maintaining as balanced a work, study, and family life as possible.
